PURPOSE OF THE JOB

Lead content strategy and acquisitions in a given publishing area, in close conjunction with the Publisher, Senior Publishing Manager, and Acquisitions Editors outside India, with a strong emphasis on evidence-based, proactive content acquisition in line with global market, customer, and Product need. This position will further the Press’s publishing and research services in Research Editorial, enhance the scholarly reputation of the Press via the acquisition of high-quality and profitable copyrights and support the Content Strategy and Acquisitions team’s goal of positioning the Press successfully to respond to market changes.

PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND KEY RESULT AREAS

1. Work with the Publisher and Senior Publishing Manager to define and develop subject acquisition strategy and set and meet goals that deliver OUP’s global publishing strategy in relevant areas.

2. Propose and develop new content according to academic quality, market appeal, and financial criteria, for internal and Delegate consideration that enhances OUP’s scholarly reputation, society relationships, and delivers usage, reach, impact, and commercial return.

3. Pursue and develop innovative publishing opportunities, new relationships with societies and co-publishing partners, and open access projects across a variety of media in alignment with agreed strategic goals, diversity and inclusion goals, and the Press’s mission.

4. Forge solid links with the Academic India Delegates to ensure good two-way communication and a constructive working relationship between the Delegates and the Press.

5. Leverage extensive author networks/reviewer pools, ensuring OUP’s Diversity and Inclusion goals are met across all reviewed and commissioned projects; manage relationships with authors, editors, reviewers, Delegates, and internal and external stakeholders.

6. Use standing and visibility in the academic community to clearly communicate OUP’s core values (quality, impact, amplification, reach) to authors and other stakeholders, and support the programme to improve author experience and maintain OUP’s reputation among author communities.

7. Guide authors in strategies to amplify content and usage.

8. Negotiate standard and non-standard contracts to secure competitive IP & optimize flexibility/future publishing models.

9. Collaborate with the Project Editor to improve publishing process; contribute subject knowledge and experience to the optimization and delivery of content post-contract, where required.

10. Work cross-functionally with Product, Sales, and Marketing, work with data reporting, market research, and analysis to identify insights that help define acquisitions strategy.

11. Mentor junior editors to help them build knowledge and experience and achieve their goals. 12. Take a leadership role in departmental projects, promote innovation, and contribute to inter-departmental initiatives and committees.

KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

• Knowledge and/or experience with academic and scholarly publishing that will enable the candidate to meet Tier A goal, with a record of development of key copyrights and strong relationships with scholars, societies, and key stakeholders.

• Subject expertise in the discipline of acquisition or a related field.

• Proven knowledge and/or experience with academic and scholarly publishing; knowledge of a relevant discipline and experience with universities, scholarly societies, and professional bodies.

• Experience with OA publishing and the launch and development of digital products desirable.

• Proven track record of managing commissioning process and title delivery/project management. • Proven experience conducting market research and data analysis.

• Demonstrated ability to adapt to new systems and processes.

• Proven experience of building, maintaining, and utilizing networks within the publishing industry and relevant academic/professional communities

• Proven experience training and/or mentoring others

• Ability to work with peers and cross-functionally in a productive manner (including within the matrix management structure of the Press) towards a common purpose.

• Excellent English-language written communication as well as strong presentation, interpersonal, and verbal skills

Internal: Editorial/Acquisitions, Content Development, Content Operations, Design, Sales, Marketing, Rights and Permissions, Compliance, Finance, Digital Publishing.

External: Authors and editors, editorial boards, reviewers, agents, Delegates and University stakeholders in relevant disciplines, research funders, professional bodies, scholarly societies, wider academy, publishers, and copyright holders
