About the Organization

The Carbon Removal India Alliance (CRIA) is a membership organisation dedicated to addressing constraints and catalysing the growth of a thriving durable carbon removal sector in India. It aims to support India in achieving its potential in terms of scale, efficiency and the provision of social and environmental co-benefits from durable carbon removal technologies.


CRIA works to:

  • Transfer knowledge on the sector to policy makers, civil society and industry to foster an enabling environment for the sector.
  • Raise awareness and trust of durable carbon removal amongst rural communities, the wider public and corporations
  • Advance the understanding of the opportunities, constraints, risks and co-benefits of durable carbon removal through rigorous research
  • Foster a sustainable, innovative and interconnected ecosystem that supports the growth and resilience of durable carbon removal in India
  • Enhance international engagement and partnership to drive predictable demand and capital inflows
  • Support India in achieving its climate and wider social, economic and environmental policy goals


Role Summary

This pivotal role offers the chance to spearhead a sector poised for exponential growth, projected to become a US$ 90 billion industry, and crucial for removing approximately a billion tons of carbon dioxide annually.

We seek a visionary leader with a fervent passion for climate change solutions, experienced in steering sustainability initiatives and fostering collaborative relationships across diverse sectors. The Executive Director will play a critical role in shaping India’s carbon removal landscape through strategic advocacy, research, and international collaboration.

Your Responsibilities


  • Strategy and Vision: Craft and execute strategic plans to elevate India’s carbon removal sector on the global stage.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Cultivate strong relationships with key players across government, industry, academia, and NGOs to advance carbon removal awareness and initiatives.
  • Research Leadership: Guide impactful research and development endeavours aligned with CRIA’s mission.
  • Advocacy and Representation: Be the voice of CRIA, championing carbon removal efforts nationally and globally.
  • Team Performance: Hire, inspire and mentor a dedicated team, fostering a culture of innovation and excellence.

The role will focus on supporting and catalysing the growth of the most exciting durable carbon removal technologies, including biochar, enhanced rock weathering, bioenergy with carbon capture and storage and direct air capture. CRIA focuses on carbon removal, not carbon reduction or avoidance. Less durable solutions such as afforestation or REDD+ projects are not in the scope of the organisation.


Who You Are

  • Experience managing teams related to sustainability at leading consultancies, government departments, think tanks, and/or in industry.
  • Excellent communicator – experience presenting and communicating to large diverse audience.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to develop relationships across a diverse range of government, industry, civil society and academic institutions.
  • Strong written communication and ability to generate high impact content.
  • A passion for durable carbon removal and an understanding of the difference between durable carbon removal and REDD+ / carbon reduction projects.
  • Holder of a master’s degree in environmental science, development or climate related fields, with at least 10 years experience.
  • Understanding of the role of policy, the not for profit sector, civil society and industry in achieving climate goals.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with experience managing a P&L and budget and an interest in building a team and Board.
  • Desire to engage in the setup of an organisation, including development of strategic plans, fund raising, hiring a team and building a brand.
  • Experience in engaging with government bodies.
  • Deeply knowledgeable about global and national climate policy , with excellent communication skills.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
