This role operates within a small agile development team assuring the quality of the applications produced and supporting smooth transitions to the SIT team via iterative releases.


The QA Engineer works closely with the QA Architect to ensure that code is tested in a continuous manner during development, in a well-maintained and suitable QA environment. This involves moving towards the goal of automating as much testing and deployment as possible while performing manual tests for scenarios that cannot be automated and otherwise performing high-value exploratory testing.


The successful applicant has a detailed and analytical approach to executing test cases and the technical ability to convert these test cases into automated test suites. They are able to think creatively when modeling pre-developed functionality and designing test cases to attack it. They are passionate about accuracy, and hyper-vigilant when testing.


The QA Engineer is a keen and collaborative communicator within the team.


Specific Responsibilities and Experience


Main Responsibilities


Planning and Estimation


  • Write test plans against functional requirements.
  • Review technical designs, requirement documents, and user stories, facilitating an ongoing feedback loop.
  • Work with developers during discovery to understand the functionality against which test cases can be written.
  • Contribute to sprint planning with plans and estimates for all testing activates.
  • Agree regression test scope with the Product Owner and work with the team to ensure test coverage requirement is met.
  • Assess and recommend potential new test tools for approval.


Manual Testing


  • Design, write and assemble well-structured manual test suites.
  • Maintain an easily navigable manual regression test pack.
  • Perform scripted manual testing against newly released software components as required.
  • Demonstrate the curiosity and determination required to effectively perform manual exploratory testing.
  • Demonstrate a 'test to break' attitude.
  • Make use of agreed tools to perform non-functional tests such as load tests.
  • Review bug reports and logs from external sources to identify and confirm reproduction steps.


Automated testing


  • Write automated test cases using agreed tools.
  • Maintain continuous testing utilizing a continually evolving automated regression pack.
  • Maintain and keep up to date all automated test suites using the company-approved version control system.


Record Keeping and Documentation


  • Identify and report software defects supported by a high level of understanding of the issue.
  • Automate as much as possible to produce clear and concise test reports.
  • Create and maintain guide documentation for use by testers and others within the business.
  • Review all internal release documentation to ensure accuracy.
  • Contribute to the production of high-quality release documentation for all releases exiting the development team.


Products and Environments


  • Understand, take ownership of, and test the deployment of software to the QA test environment.
  • Own and maintain the test environment, including the audit of spare parts, printing materials, etc.
  • Ensure that a professional test lab environment is maintained, which conforms to the requirements stipulated by Facilities Support.


Management and Workflow


  • Work with the Product Team to ensure swift and accurate triage of bugs, on a daily basis if required.
  • Manage JIRA entities within sprints, ensuring the status' are always accurate thereby.
  • Ensure the correct process is followed to facilitate accurate tracking of quality assurance metrics.


Training and Technical Growth


  • Stay up to date with new testing tools and test strategies.


Conduct


  • Ensure a professional approach within the friendly atmosphere at Inspired.
  • Communicate in a diplomatic and polite way.
  • Maintain strong relationships with teammates and with colleagues from other teams.

Recommended Qualifications


  • BCS/ ISTQB (ISEB) Certified/Agile/Mobile Tester Foundation Level
  • Certification in any relevant technical area
  • BCS/ ISTQB (ISEB) Certified Tester Intermediate Level
  • Degree level education in technical discipline (min 2.1)
