Qualifications, Job Knowledge, Skills, Experience.


  • Min 3+ years Illumination Optical Design (non-imaging) experience; LED experience highly preferred
  • Expertise in optical physics
  • Knowledge or hands on experience in using 3D CAD (CATIA/ Creo /UG NX/ Solidworks)
  • Working experience with industry-standard numerical tools used in optical physics modeling.
  • Materials science (especially polymers and glass) and optical materials
  • Ability to coordinate and work on numerous projects simultaneously.
  • Sound knowledge on LEDs and its selection based on customer requirement and statutory regulations.
  • Experience in optical reflector design including special coatings.
  • Knowledge on color shifts, filters, polarized films, in-mold stress on lens.
  • Hands-on experience on products with backlighting, mood lighting, ambient lighting, daytime running lights etc.
  • Expertise in Automotive as well as non-automotive domain lighting
  • Knowhow on transmitted and reflected colors and industry standards to quantify the same.
  • Glass surface texture design and coating design for optimal light extraction, anti-reflective/ anti-glare properties
  • Should be able to differentiate colors and have passed Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue Test
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, and ability to work as a team player.
  • Must be a proactive and solution-oriented problem solver


Key responsibilities


  • Develop cutting-edge lighting solutions for various vehicle types including automobiles, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, recreational vehicles, and light rail. These solutions encompass both exterior and interior lighting systems, employing a range of light sources such as incandescent, HID, and LED. Conduct comprehensive lighting simulations on a global scale within design centers, offering valuable insights and suggestions to the design team. Facilitate the design process of aesthetic components by supplying crucial optical simulations and renderings that align with the precise product specifications.
  • Develop feasible concepts that can be produced while satisfying legal and customer criteria and staying within specified tolerances. This involves optical modeling and simulation of optical components and surfaces.
  • Perform feasibility, and benchmark studies to support quotes, and future marketing. Evaluate/create prototypes and correlate with simulation results.
  • Analyze off-tool parts, perform root cause analysis, and assist in certification of lamps.
  • Interface pro-actively with Design Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Tooling Engineers, and customers to develop optical concepts.
  • Review legal market requirements for vehicle lighting to meet industry standards.
  • Assist in design of manufacturing tools, fixtures and processes required to build and service the optical sub-systems.
  • Evaluate parts, optical testing related equipment and vendors related to optical development of lamps, create/improve layout for testing lab and procurement of Lighting Equipment.
  • Review components that interact with the optical subsystems of company products
  • Optimize designs to improve beam characteristics and overall optical efficiency.
  • Evaluate and characterize secondary optical solutions and customer lighting fixtures using optical instrumentation such as a goniometer, spectrometer, and illuminance meters.
  • Generate clear and detailed documentation for optical designs and test results.
  • Work with Manufacturing to diagnose concerns with the company’s products.
  • Assist on new RFQ activities and other duties as assigned
