POSITION SUMMARY

The Assistant Controller is an integral member of the Controllership team, with skills and knowledge required in areas including accounts receivable, accounts payable, accruals, deferrals, treasury, tax, financial audits and general ledger maintenance. The position provides application of more complex accounting principles necessary to provide accurate, timely and valid accounting treatment and results appropriate to the profession and within the company.


JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting or other related field, advanced degree preferred.Certified Public Accountant or Chartered Accountant preferred. A combination of education and experience can be substituted.

Minimum of 10 years’ experience in areas including accounts receivable, accounts payable, accruals, deferrals, treasury, tax, financial audits and general ledger maintenance, as well as month-end/year-end close process.

Able to apply Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and/or International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS) and professional judgment to more complex accounting or finance tasks in accordance with company standards and in cases of less clearly defined parameters. Experience with Revenue Recognition preferred.

Applies accounting knowledge to support accurate general ledger accounting.

Able to analyze more complex balance sheet reconciliations to ensure proper application of accounting policies and accurate account balances.

Skilled in variance analysis to provide an accurate description variance drivers.

Able to adhere to timelines and produce accurate results professionally, at times under pressured situations.

Analytical, organized, self-motivated, confidential and ethical contributor to the business. A proactive, self-starter who communicates well.

Advanced MS Office (example: Excel), financial software user (example: Workday) and Power-BI/Power-Query (preferred).

JOB DUTIES

*Prepares, reviews and records journal entries in accordance with company policy and IFRS regulations

*Prepares and provides balance sheet account reconciliations

*Makes determinations outside of prescribed methods regarding whether an entry should be reversing or general, evaluating which general ledger accounts to use, and what type of transaction the entry is recording depending on the unique content of the request; this may apply to foreign entities including analyses of account balances, coding of invoices and posting of accrual entries

*Identifies, aligns and/or develops accounting administrative procedures that will ensure correct accounting treatment (could relate to revenue recognition, start-up cost amortization, accruals or deferrals), and will allow for effective partnership with the business to reduce costs, improve efficiency and/or enhance client relationships

*Ensures the use of appropriate templates for accounting reports, timing and methodologies which provide accounting data suitable for assigned audiences and/or in accordance with established timelines or other ad hoc needs for assigned scope of responsibility

Provides accurate judgment to business partners using prescribed accounting theories and practices; distills accounting data to make suitable for varying audiences

Works alongside manager when conducting external audits

Supports accounting related needs on special or complex projects

Contributes fresh ideas to best practices to ensure consistency in reporting, and contributes ideas for effective controls to maximize efficiency or conformity with accounting principles

Communicates and works through accounting concerns with managers and peers in a results-oriented, respectful and professional manner
