Job Description:
A medical attendant for an occupational health center within a plant premises is responsible for providing initial medical assessment and first aid to employees for work-related injuries and illnesses. The role is crucial for ensuring immediate care, promoting a safe workplace, and maintaining employee health records.
Core responsibilities
Clinical duties:
- Provide immediate first aid and emergency treatment for on-the-job injuries and sudden illnesses.
- Administer medications and treatments under standing orders or a supervising medical professional's direction.
- Assess patient conditions and determine the appropriate course of action, including stabilizing patients for transfer to an outside medical facility.
- Perform basic medical procedures, such as sterilizing and dressing minor cuts and burns, and applying bandages.
- Conduct diagnostic tests and health monitoring, which may include taking vital signs, performing drug tests, and administering hearing or pulmonary function tests.
- Assist the plant's medical officer or nurse in examinations and procedures.
- Respond promptly to all medical emergencies within the plant premises.
- Administer CPR and other life-saving techniques as needed.
- Coordinate with emergency services (e.g., ambulance) to ensure timely transport of seriously ill or injured employees.
- Maintain readiness of emergency medical equipment and supplies.
- Maintain accurate and confidential medical records and documentation for all employee interactions.
- Keep a current log of all workplace injuries, including details of treatment plans.
- Support the case management of workers' compensation claims by maintaining accurate treatment records.
- Prepare and submit reports to management and regulatory bodies as required.
- Collaborate with plant safety officers and management to ensure compliance with health and safety regulations, such as OSHA.
- Identify potential workplace hazards and recommend preventative safety measures.
- Participate in safety audits and meetings.
- Assist in implementing wellness programs and health education initiatives for employees.
- Monitor and restock the inventory of all medical supplies and equipment.
- Inspect and maintain first-aid and medical station equipment to ensure it is functional and well-stocked.
- Ensure a clean, secure, and healthy environment within the occupational health center.
- Certification: Valid certification in First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS) is typically required. An Industrial Government Certificate may also be necessary depending on the specific location.
- Medical knowledge: Strong understanding of first-aid procedures, emergency protocols, and occupational health concepts.
- Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills to interact with employees, management, and emergency services.
- Composure: The ability to remain calm and make critical decisions quickly in emergency situations.
- Physical stamina: May need to perform physically demanding tasks, such as assisting with the movement of injured employees.
- Discretion: Strict adherence to patient confidentiality and privacy laws.
- Organizational skills: Strong attention to detail for maintaining accurate records and managing medical supplies.
