VMC Operator — Role Overview

• Operate and set up Vertical Machining Centres (VMCs, which are CNC milling machines) to manufacture precision parts.
• Work from technical drawings, blueprints, or program files to machine components as per specifications.
• Maintain quality by inspecting parts using measuring tools (micrometres, callipers, height gauges, etc.)
• Perform routine maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and ensure the machine operates smoothly.
• Keep machines clean, follow safety procedures, and ensure good housekeeping in the machining area.
• Document production data, inspection reports, and machine parameters.
• Work in coordination with quality, engineering, or programming teams to resolve production issues.

Key Responsibilities

• Machine Setup & Calibration
• Install and align tools, fixtures, and workpieces.
• Configure tooling offsets, reference points, and program parameters.
• Load raw material and optimize the setup for efficient machining.
• Operation & Machining
• Run VMC machines (CNC-controlled) based on G-code / M-code or CAM programs.
• Monitor machining operations, cycle times, tool wear, and machine behavior.
• Make in-process adjustments if required (e.g., offsets, feed/speed changes).
• Quality Control & Inspection
• Conduct first-piece inspection to validate dimensions.
• Use precision measuring instruments (micrometers, verniers, height gauges) to check parts.
• Report any deviations or defects, and take corrective action (or escalate).
• Maintenance & Troubleshooting
• Perform preventive maintenance (cleaning, lubrication, checks).
• Identify mechanical issues, coordinate repairs or tool replacements.
• Maintain machine logs / maintenance records.

Required Skills and Qualifications

• Education:
• ITI / Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Tool & Die Making, or similar trade.
• Some roles may accept 10th pass + relevant experience. Apna
• Experience:
• Varies: Junior roles may take freshers; others require 1–3 years or more.
• Experience with CNC / VMC machine operation and basic programming is preferred.
• Technical Skills:
• Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings / blueprints.
• Knowledge of G & M codes, offsets, tool registers.
• Familiarity with machine controllers (Fanuc, Siemens, or similar).
• Good mechanical aptitude and problem-solving.
• Proficiency with measuring tools (micrometers, calipers, etc.).
• Personal Attributes:
• Attention to detail and precision.
• Basic communication and numerical skills. (As per the SSC / CNC-VMC qualification pack.).
• Ability to plan and organize work, take initiative.
• Willingness to learn, adapt, and follow SOPs.

Working Conditions

• Typically on a shop floor in a manufacturing or engineering plant.
• Shift work: Could be day shift or night shift depending on the company. (Many VMC operators work in rotations.)
• Physically demanding: lifting raw materials, tools; setting up machines; handling fixtures.
• Environmental factors: Noise, coolant mist, metal chips — safety practices are very important.
• Documentation and compliance: Operators often maintain logs and must adhere to quality standards.

Pay: ₹10, ₹30,000.00 per month
