A Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Specialist analyzes, tests, and modifies websites to optimize them for search engines, leading to higher rankings in major search results like Google and Bing.

Primary responsibilities

An SEO engineer's main goal is to improve a website's crawlability, speed, and overall technical health so search engines can more easily understand and rank the site. Key tasks include:

  • Conducting technical audits: Diagnosing issues like crawl errors, broken links, and slow page loading.
  • Optimizing website architecture: Configuring XML sitemaps, files, and URL structures for maximum efficiency.
  • Implementing structured data: Using schema markup to help search engines better understand page content and enhance search result visibility.
  • Managing site migrations: Planning and executing website redesigns or moves to new platforms with minimal SEO impact.
  • Improving Core Web Vitals: Working with web developers to improve page speed, interactivity, and visual stability.
  • Analyzing log files: Reviewing server logs to gain insight into how search engines crawl and interact with a website.

A successful SEO engineer must possess a blend of advanced technical and soft skills:

Hard skills

  • Technical SEO proficiency: Mastery of advanced technical SEO concepts, including server-side vs. client-side rendering.
  • Web development basics: Solid understanding of HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and web standards to collaborate effectively with development teams.
  • Analytics tools: Expertise with platforms like Google Analytics, Google Search Console, and specialized SEO tools such as Screaming Frog, Semrush, or Ahrefs.
  • Data analysis: Strong analytical skills to interpret performance metrics and translate data into actionable insights.

Soft skills
