A CNC setter is responsible for preparing, setting up, and operating Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines to produce parts according to technical blueprints and specifications. This includes interpreting blueprints, adjusting machine settings, installing tooling, performing first-piece inspections, and making any necessary corrections to ensure quality and efficiency. They also perform routine maintenance on the machines.

Key responsibilities

  • Machine setup and operation: Prepare and set up CNC machines (such as VMC, HMC, or lathes) for production runs, including installing tools and fixtures.
  • Blueprint interpretation: Read and understand technical blueprints to understand the exact sizes and requirements for the finished components.
  • Quality control: Perform first-piece inspections using precision measuring instruments like micrometers and dial calipers to ensure accuracy.
  • Machine monitoring and adjustment: Observe the machine during operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and make adjustments to the machine and the part program as needed.
  • Maintenance: Perform regular and preventative maintenance on the machinery to ensure optimal performance.
  • Record keeping: Maintain accurate logs and documentation related to production and machine performance.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Technical knowledge: Strong understanding of CNC machine programming and operation, including common controllers like Fanuc or Siemens.
  • Attention to detail: Ability to work to exact tolerances and specifications, often translating complex designs into precise parts.
  • Problem-solving: Aptitude for troubleshooting and making corrections to the machine and program to optimize performance.
  • Math and measurement: Proficiency in using mathematical formulas and precision measuring tools.
  • Versatility: Ability to work with various materials, such as soft and hard metals, plastics, and acrylic.
  • Communication: Good communication skills to coordinate with team members and supervisors.
  • Safety awareness: Strong knowledge of safe working practices and the ability to adhere to safety regulations.
