Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, India RML Mehrotra Pathology Full time ₹ 2,00,000 - ₹ 4,00,000 per year

Job Roles & Responsibilities:

A transcription typist in a pathology lab (or pathology transcriptionist / medical transcriptionist with histopathology focus) is responsible for converting dictated or handwritten pathology reports (gross descriptions, microscopic findings, diagnoses) into properly formatted written documents. Their output becomes part of the patient's medical record, used by pathologists, clinicians, and other medical staff to guide diagnosis and treatment.

Here are the typical duties you would expect for a histopathology transcription typist (at RML or another pathology lab):

  • Transcribe pathology reports: Listen to audio dictations (or take inputs from handwritten notes) of gross tissue descriptions, microscopic observations, diagnoses, and other relevant details; then type them out into clear, structured, professionally formatted reports.
  • Edit and proofread: Review the transcribed text for spelling, grammar, correct medical terminology, clarity, completeness. Ensure that abbreviations are expanded, jargon is properly written, and the report follows the lab's standard format.
  • Ensure data accuracy and integrity: Cross-verify patient demographics, specimen identifiers, and other metadata (sample type, lab ID numbers, etc.) with source documents to avoid mismatches.
  • Maintain documentation standards: Use standard templates and formatting guidelines, ensure consistency across reports, and follow lab-specific or regulatory protocol for documentation.
  • Timely report generation: Adhere to turnaround-time targets — ensure that dictated reports are transcribed, reviewed, and sent for final pathologist verification within expected timelines.
  • Handle multiple pathologies/subspecialties: Transcribe reports from a variety of pathology disciplines — e.g. general surgical pathology, cytopathology, special stains, consult reports, follow-ups.
  • Record management & digital filing: Manage digital audio files and transcribed documents; ensure secure, confidential storage, easy retrieval, and proper indexing in the lab information system (or database).
  • Quality control & error reporting: Flag inconsistencies or ambiguous dictations, liaise with pathologists or lab technicians for clarifications, ensure error-free final reports.
  • Administrative/clerical support (when needed): In some labs, transcription typists may perform additional clerical tasks — e.g. logging requisitions, preparing forms/slides for send-out, distributing finalized reports, basic office duties like data entry or filing.

Skills & Competencies Expected

Given that the training program at RML Academy of Laboratory Medicine for transcription emphasizes certain competencies — likely demanded by RML Pathology — a good transcription typist should have:

  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology — especially terms used in histopathology/cytopathology.
  • Good listening skills to accurately capture dictations, even those with complex technical language.
  • High typing speed and accuracy, proficiency in transcription software or word-processing tools.
  • Attention to detail & strong proofreading/editing skills to maintain quality of final reports.
  • Ability to work under deadlines — handle multiple reports, meet turnaround targets.
  • Basic computer/data-entry skills and familiarity with lab information systems or electronic health record (EHR) systems (if used).
  • Confidentiality and ethical awareness — since patient data is sensitive and reports are part of medical records.
