Lead Subsea Engineer SURF
Role & responsibilities:
Brief Job Purpose
Responsible for the design, installation, and operational integrity of subsea umbilicals, risers, flowlines, and pipelines in deepwater oil and gas projects. This role ensures that all SURF systems are engineered for maximum efficiency, safety, and reliability in extreme offshore conditions. The engineer leads a multidisciplinary team to ensure the successful integration of SURF systems with other subsea and floating facilities, adhering to industry standards and regulatory requirements. The Lead SURF & Pipeline Engineer is also involved in the commissioning, optimization, and maintenance of these systems throughout the projects lifecycle, ensuring continuous performance and safety.
Responsibilities and Key Objectives
- Design subsea umbilical that carries hydraulic fluids, chemicals, power, and data between the surface facilities and subsea equipment. Ensure that umbilical is properly sized and designed for the operational depth, environment, and production needs of the project.
- Design riser systems (flexible, rigid, or hybrid) that connect subsea systems to the surface platforms, ensuring they can handle production, injection, and control fluids under the high-pressure, high-temperature conditions encountered at deepwater depths.
- Design subsea flowlines to transport hydrocarbons and other fluids from subsea production systems (e.g., subsea trees, manifolds) to the surface facilities. Ensure that flowlines are optimized for the required production rates, fluid properties, and environmental conditions.
- Perform detailed mechanical and structural analysis to ensure that each component of the SURF system can withstand dynamic loading, external forces (e.g., currents, waves, seismic), pressure, temperature, and corrosion risks.
- Select appropriate materials (e.g., corrosion-resistant alloys, flexible materials) that are durable enough to survive harsh offshore conditions, considering fatigue resistance, corrosion protection, and lifecycle management.
- Coordinate the design of the SURF systems with other engineering disciplines, ensuring seamless integration between subsea equipment, flowlines, risers, umbilical, and surface facilities (e.g., floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) units, fixed platforms).
- Ensure that risers, flowlines, and umbilical are effectively integrated with subsea production systems, including subsea trees, manifolds, and control systems, facilitating the continuous flow of production and communication between the surface and seabed.
- Provide input to the design of floating production systems (FPSOs), drilling rigs, and offshore platforms to accommodate and integrate risers, flowlines, and umbilical.
- Develop installation plans and procedures for subsea umbilical, risers, and flowlines, ensuring that the equipment is laid down or connected to the seabed safely, with minimal risk of damage.
- Oversee the installation process of SURF systems, including the deployment of flexible risers, umbilical, and flowlines, using specialized equipment like offshore vessels, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), and cranes.
- Conduct detailed testing (e.g., hydrostatic tests, pull tests) of subsea components to ensure the integrity of the systems before they are put into operation.
- Support the commissioning process, ensuring proper functional testing of the installed systems to verify that they meet the design specifications.
- Monitor the performance of subsea umbilical, risers, and flowlines during the operational phase to ensure safe and efficient operation, identifying potential issues such as leaks, corrosion, or damage.
- Implement monitoring systems (e.g., pressure and temperature sensors, acoustic monitoring) to track the health and status of the SURF systems.
- Perform root cause analysis of any failures or operational issues, and recommend corrective actions, which could include repair, maintenance, or redesign.
- Develop and implement maintenance strategies to ensure the integrity and reliability of SURF systems throughout their operational life. This includes routine inspections, testing, and replacements of components.
- Coordinate repair activities for any subsea umbilical, riser, or flowline failures, including the use of ROVs and diving teams for subsea repairs and interventions.
- Design and implement subsea inspection programs, ensuring that any degradation, wear, or damage is detected early to minimize downtime and operational risks.
- Conduct safety and risk assessments (e.g., HAZID, HAZOP) to identify potential hazards associated with the design, installation, and operation of the SURF systems.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards, codes, and regulations (e.g., API, DNV GL, ISO, NORSOK) for subsea systems.
- Design the SURF systems to minimize environmental impact and ensure they meet regulatory requirements for safety, quality, and environmental protection.
Requirement
- Min. bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Civil Engineering, Subsea Engineering, or a related field
- Master's degree in Subsea or Offshore Engineering can be beneficial.
- Min. 25-year experiences in oil & gas project with specific 15 years' experience in deep water project and 10 years in subsea engineering, with a focus on subsea umbilical's, risers, and flowlines (SURF) for offshore or deepwater oil and gas projects.
- Hands-on experience with the design, installation, testing, and operation of subsea umbilical's, risers, and flowlines in deepwater environments.
- Experience with offshore projects, particularly those involving complex riser and flowline systems, is highly desirable.
- Expertise in the design and analysis of subsea umbilical, risers, and flowlines, including flexibility analysis, fatigue, and structural integrity.
- Strong knowledge of materials selection and corrosion protection strategies for subsea systems, including advanced coatings, cathodic protection, and corrosion-resistant materials.
- Proficiency in design software (e.g., SACS, ANSYS, AutoCAD, FEM analysis tools) for structural modelling and analysis of subsea systems.
- Familiarity with installation techniques, such as pipeline laying, riser deployment, and umbilical installation, using specialized vessels and ROVs.
- Knowledge of safety standards and regulations governing subsea systems, including API 17J, DNVGL, ISO 13628, and NORSOK standards.
- Chartered Engineer or Professional Engineer (PE): Certification from an accredited engineering body (e.g., CEng, PE, or equivalent) is beneficial.
- Offshore Safety Certifications: BOSIET, HUET, and other relevant offshore safety training certifications.
- Subsea Engineering Certifications (optional): Specific training or certifications in subsea equipment and riser technology can be an advantage.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills, especially for addressing complex subsea issues in remote or harsh conditions.
