**JOB TITLE: Digital Open Source and IP Advisor**

- The digital innovation commercial team is focussed on accelerating a technology revolution that enables rapid decarbonization by digitalizing the global energy system. Cooperation and working together with external parties are the best path to individual and collective success. Open interfaces and open source reference implementations enable interoperability between solutions, whether in-house or vendor built, so that utilities and end users can leverage best of breed options in the ecosystem.
- The team will also focus on leading and managing the IP strategy for the VP-ship of Computational Science and Digital Innovation (CSDI) specifically the digital innovation themes. A future proof business model for digital innovation rests on three pillars. 1) Extensive IP/legal protection will help defend Shell’s digital technological leadership and protect Shell’s brand, hence securing our investments in digital innovative products and technologies; 2) Understanding market potential and customer demand helps Shell develop suitable digital products and technologies customer backwards, create unique customer value and secure a return on our investments; and 3)Fostering digital technological innovation will help us maintain a leading market position and lock in customers and investors.
- The digital innovation commercial team has the following vision for open source program: To leverage the power of a diverse global community of technical and digital expertise, to enable judiciously chosen contribution while complying with license obligations, to allow ourselves to use open source with ease, work in the open, release projects, and be secure.
- Shell has deeply invested in developing differentiated Digital products where an alternative does not exist on the commercial market or is not sufficiently mature to serve a Shell business need. The digital innovation GM-ship has created new business models and new revenue streams from Digital as a key strand of Shell’s Digital Strategy in collaboration with various other organizations in Shell. Commercialization of Shell’s Digital products and IP can be a key enabler of this objective. And the process of open source is analogous to commercialization. Hence open source is formally approved by the digital commercial steerco as one of the commercial archetypes and the role will sit in the digital commercial team of Digital Innovation GM-ship in CSDI VP-ship.
- The Digital Innovation team will manage and lead the development of the capability that open sources Shell Digital products and services, in line with mandates, governance processes and business goals and targets. The team will include core members in Digital who will own the maturation of the process that enables this to happen
- The team will be responsible for internally liaising with Technology and Business managers to select and prioritize Digital products for open sourcing based on Shell’s competitive advantage, solution readiness, energy transition strategy and Shell’s business strategy in the solution domain - assuring that Shell Digital products deliver value for Shell first and foremost and enables Shell to achieve the benefits of open source.
- The team will be responsible for understanding 3rd party, open source consortiums/partners and addressable markets, selecting the right partners to open source, building partnerships and delivery models, finding the right channels to exploit, and supporting alignment with key stakeholders such as digital commercial decision review board and architecture review boards
- whilst managing all associated risks (IP management, brand & reputation protection, conformance with software licensing standards, patent & design infringement etc)

**What’s the role?**
- The Digital Open Source and IP Advisor, as the name says involve a dual role for open source program throughout Shell as well as the IP strategy management and delivery for CSDI VP-ship.
- The Digital Open Source and IP Advisor will work with the relevant stakeholders and set the strategy and objectives for the open source program, and have accountability for delivery against these, and management of associated risks within the open source governance process via digital commercial Decision Review Board (DRB), open source program guidelines and standards.
- The Digital Open Source and IP Advisor will advise and often lead on all elements of open source by closing working with architecture review board of IDT, internal product owners, open source partners and internal stakeholders.
- The Digital Open Source and IP Advisor will partner with the team of open source SMEs, partner liaisons, business analysts and customer engineering teams, IDT, IP, Legal, Finance, etc. to successfully deliver the open source projects/use cases, partnerships.
