Job Summary

As a Senior Structural Designer at Black & Veatch, you will lead the development of complex design concepts and deliverables, providing technical guidance and direction to other engineering professionals. Your expertise in engineering principles and established design practices will enable you to drive high-quality designs and ensure compliance with industry standards and company policies.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering Standards:

  • Develop and maintain knowledge of engineering standards, systems, document control, and departmental guides to ensure compliance and consistency in design deliverables.
  • Review project requirements and determine the correct format and contents of required deliverables, ensuring accuracy and completeness.

Quality / Continuous Improvement:

  • Promote quality and continuous improvement within the project or team, ensuring that design deliverables meet or exceed expectations.
  • Review design inputs to ensure consistency with established standards and practices.
  • Ensure that design deliverables are in compliance with relevant codes and standards.
  • Responsible for drawing control and historical records, utilizing established methods.
  • Drive continual improvement and change management efforts, demonstrating personal accuracy and initiative.

Engineering Production:

  • Apply basic engineering principles and established design practices to develop moderately complex design concepts and deliverables.
  • Use judgment and make decisions regarding deliverables and input interpretation.
  • Capable of handling difficult technical assignments within an area of expertise and providing technical guidance to other professionals.
  • Perform design calculations, detailed material quantities, and estimates, and maintain records.
  • Utilize advanced applications, such as modeling and design software, to perform work assignments.
  • May review deliverables of others and define work assignments and maintain schedules.
  • May program control systems or participate in plant start-up activities associated with a specialized area of expertise.

Project Coordination:

  • Coordinate with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development.
  • May support field activities and communicate project design requirements, progress, and schedules.

Client Focus:

  • Assist in identifying key client interests and drivers and may determine key clients in some instances.
  • Communicate client interests and drivers to project team members and develop approaches to accommodate these concerns.

Knowledge Sharing, Innovation, and Technology:

  • May assist discipline or department management in developing and communicating design standards and process improvement activities.
  • Identify training and development needs for personnel supervised.
  • May be recognized for expertise in one or more areas.

People Management - (Supervision - Career Development - Developing Professionals, Mentoring):

  • Assist with functions including performance management process, recognition, and corrective actions.
  • Participate in career planning and learning and development.
  • Supervise engineering technicians, including mentoring, instructing, delegation of work, and providing feedback.

Resource Management - (Staffing):

  • Assist in monitoring staffing levels and available skill sets for project(s).
  • Identify resource application needs and process requirements.
