The appointee to this position will work on designing and prototyping passive mechanical and active robotic/mechatronic assistive devices. The position is aimed to work on a range of devices from wheelchair accessories and power assists, to more advanced mobility solutions. The appointee to this position would be expected to have a strong grasp on designing devices from first principles, and with a team of other engineers will work to refine and validate solutions in simulation, design and develop prototypes and interface with different sensing and actuation technologies. As part of a team, the appointee would realise high TRL prototypes.


Key Responsibilities

  • To initiate and conceptualise ideas on a system and subsystem level and use physics-based first principles to develop the same.
  • To simulate the physics (free-body diagrams) by coding through first principles (on platform of choice like MATLAB, Python, C/C++, …) or by using simulation platforms.
  • To adeptly realise prototypes of desired mechanical structures through CAD software (like SolidWorks, Fusion360, ...).
  • Realise fabrication of developed designs using different methods including CNC, 3D printing, and other conventional fabrication techniques.
  • To use design for manufacturing principles to identify appropriate fabrication techniques and optimise designs for mass manufacturing.
  • Realise prototypes of entire platform by combining it with different sensing and actuation technologies.
  • To be able to realise manufacturing line and assembly protocol for entire device.
  • With other researchers, program mechatronic platforms and realise control systems.
  • To set up the testing protocol and conduct extensive testing sessions.
  • To take initiatives in the planning of R&D for the project and coordinate with team regarding the same.
  • To conduct and plan own scientific/development work with appropriate supervision.
  • To upskill oneself and be keen to self-learn different topics ranging from machine learning, control systems, electronics, etc.
  • To maintain organised, accurate and complete records of all experimental data and findings.
  • To contribute to reports for submission to research sponsors, applications for new grant applications, pitches to investors, and for patents and research publications.


A good undergraduate degree or master's in Mechanical Engineering; candidates with demonstrable experience in design and prototyping.


Experience/Knowledge

  • Excellent grasp of physics first-principles and designing mechanical/mechatronic systems using the same.
  • Expert in designing with CAD software (like SolidWorks, Fusion360, …).
  • Expert in analysing, iterating and optimising with FEA software (like Ansys, Abaqus …).
  • Coordinate with technicians, vendors and other team members to realise prototypes using conventional/new fabrication methods including 3D printing, laser cutting, etc.
  • Integrating and interfacing mechanical structures with actuators and sensors to realise a robust and practical mechatronic/robotic system
  • Apply design for manufacturing (DfM) principles to refine designed parts to ensure optimal manufacturing
  • Experience in planning/conducting user trials and reiterating developed designs
  • Desirable: Programming experience required to code equations obtained from free-body diagrams using language of choice (MATLAB, Python, …) to simulate device design.
