z/OS Systems Programmer

PKWARE is looking for an experienced z/OS Systems Programmer to design, implement, and maintain enterprise-level system software in IBM mainframe environments. This role focuses on system configuration, performance tuning, security, automation, and troubleshooting to ensure high availability and optimal performance. You’ll lead technical initiatives and collaborate with cross-functional teams to support business and IT objectives.Key ResponsibilitiesSystem Installation, Maintenance & UpgradesInstall, upgrade, configure, and maintain z/OS and subsystems (JES2, RACF, CICS, DB2, IMS).Manage system updates, PTFs, APARs using SMP/E.Ensure system stability and compatibility across releases.Performance Tuning & Capacity PlanningMonitor and optimize CPU, memory, and I/O performance.Tune WLM, Sysplex, and critical components.Conduct capacity planning and recommend hardware upgrades.Security & ComplianceAdminister RACF and enforce security policies.Ensure compliance with SOX, PCI-DSS, HIPAA.Apply security patches and mitigate vulnerabilities.Storage & Backup ManagementManage DFSMS, VSAM, HSM, and storage tools.Oversee backups, DR, and high-availability solutions.Optimize disk and tape storage usage.Incident Management & TroubleshootingDiagnose and resolve system abends and bottlenecks.Analyze dumps, logs, and traces for root cause.Work with IBM support and vendors on complex issues.Automation & ScriptingDevelop automation using REXX, JCL, CLIST, Ansible.Improve monitoring, job scheduling, and efficiency.Automate repetitive tasks to streamline processes.Disaster Recovery & High AvailabilityImplement and test DR plans for business continuity.Maintain Parallel Sysplex and failover configurations.Documentation & Knowledge SharingMaintain technical documentation and best practices.Mentor junior team members and share knowledge.Required QualificationsBachelor’s degree in computer science, IT, or equivalent experience.5+ years as a z/OS Systems Programmer or similar role.Expertise in z/OS, z/VM, JES2, SMP/E, TSO, ISPF, RACF, JCL, REXX, VTAM, TCP/IP, USS, z/Linux.Strong understanding of IBM mainframe hardware, Sysplex, and storage management.Experience with performance tuning and troubleshooting using logs and dumps.Familiarity with automation tools and middleware integration.Preferred QualificationsExperience with CICS, DB2, IMS, MQ, WebSphere, or z/VM.Familiarity with ACF2, Top Secret, and cloud integration (zCloud, IBM Z Ansible).Knowledge of Containers, AI, and ability to read Assembler/C code.Certifications: IBM Certified System Programmer – z/OS, ITIL Foundation.Soft SkillsStrong problem-solving and analytical skills.Ability to work independently and lead initiatives.Excellent communication and collaboration skills.What We OfferCompetitive salary and benefits.Opportunity to work on mission-critical enterprise systems.Professional growth and training on modern mainframe and hybrid cloud technologies.Collaborative and inclusive work environment.About PKWAREPKWARE offers the only data discovery and protection solution that locates and secures sensitive data across any device or environment.
