Cassandra Database Administrator

The Cassandra Database Administrator will be responsible for managing, monitoring, and maintaining Cassandra database clusters in a high-availability environment. This role requires expertise in NoSQL databases, specifically Cassandra, to ensure optimal performance, scalability, and reliability. The candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to implement best practices and proactively address database performance issues.
Key Responsibilities
1. Cassandra Cluster Management
- Install, configure, and maintain Cassandra clusters in development, testing, and production environments.- Implement and manage Cassandra replication strategies for high availability and disaster recovery.- Upgrade, patch, and monitor Cassandra nodes to ensure stability and performance.
1. Database Monitoring and Optimization
- Monitor database performance, availability, and security using tools like DataStax OpsCenter, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar.- Optimize query performance, troubleshoot issues, and perform tuning to enhance efficiency and reduce latency.- Conduct root cause analysis of performance issues and implement proactive measures.
1. Backup and Recovery
- Develop and maintain backup and recovery strategies for Cassandra databases.- Perform regular backups, restore data as required, and ensure data integrity and consistency.
1. Capacity Planning and Scalability
- Forecast and manage storage capacity and database scaling based on growth and application needs.- Collaborate with infrastructure and DevOps teams to ensure appropriate resources are allocated for Cassandra.
1. Security and Compliance
- Implement database security, access controls, and encryption standards in compliance with organizational policies.- Manage user roles and permissions, ensuring data access aligns with security policies.
1. Documentation and Support
- Document processes, database configurations, and troubleshooting procedures.- Provide support to application developers, troubleshoot complex issues, and participate in on-call rotation as needed.
Qualifications
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or related field (or equivalent experience).- Experience: 4+ years as a Database Administrator, with at least 2 years of hands-on experience managing Cassandra clusters in a production environment.- Technical Skills:- In-depth knowledge of Apache Cassandra architecture and internals.- Proficiency with Cassandra query language (CQL) and data modeling best practices.- Strong experience in performance tuning, troubleshooting, and monitoring Cassandra databases.- Familiarity with tools like OpsCenter, Prometheus, Grafana, and Ansible (or similar).- Knowledge of Linux/Unix systems and shell scripting for automation.- Experience with backup/recovery processes, Cassandra consistency levels, and replication strategies.- Familiarity with Python or Java for automation and integration is a plus.- Other Skills:- Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.- Strong communication and teamwork skills.- Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment and manage multiple tasks.
